The CAA aims to provide citizenship to non-Muslim refugees of Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh who have faced religious persecution. The Prime Minister couldn’t visit Assam in December when the India-Japan bilateral meet scheduled in Guwahati was cancelled due to the protests. His expected visit to the opening ceremony of the Khelo India Youth Games held in Guwahati last month also didn’t happen.
