The Assam government on Monday made the Covid-19 test mandatory for all passengers entering the state from other North-Eastern region due to the rising number of cases in the neighbouring states, a notification issued by the Health and Family Welfare department said.

India has since February 23 made it mandatory for passengers to produce the negative report of the RT-PCR tests.

The health ministry said higher testing across wide regions leads to early identification of positive cases, prompt tracking through efficient surveillance and tracing, and timely and effective treatment in homes/facilities and in hospitals for the severe cases, adding that these measures in tandem eventually lead to lower mortality rate.
