PM Modi to visit Odisha, Bengal on Friday to review impact of Cyclone Yaas

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee said at least 10 million people were affected and 300,000 houses damaged in the state due to the rough weather conditions arising out of Cyclone Yaas.

Cyclone Yaas: 8 lakh people affected in Jharkhand

The India Meteorological Department said that Cyclone Yaas is hovering over south Jharkhand. The storm is likely to move northwards and weaken gradually into a depression in the next six hours, it added.

Naveen Patnaik undertakes aerial survey of cyclone-hit areas in Odisha

Naveen Patnaik has announced a seven-day relief for 128 villages in Balasore and Bhadrak districts that were marooned by the tidal surge and heavy downpour on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Though at least three persons have reportedly been killed due to the cyclone, the state administration is yet to confirm the causes of their deaths.

Families seek shelter as cyclone Yaas leaves thousands homeless in Bengal

Cyclone Yaas weakens into a deep depression over Jharkhand

Jharkhand was put on high alert and a complete lockdown was imposed in some parts of the state to prevent people from venturing out as the authorities evacuated those staying in low-lying areas and shifted them to storm centres ahead of the Cyclone's expected arrival in the state.

Yaas fury lashes east coast

India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials said “very severe cyclonic storm” Yaas made landfall near Barajadhauli village in Odisha’s Balasore district at 9am, and then moved north-west.

Mini tornado hits villages of West Bengal before cyclone

The incident took the residents of Bandel and Chinsurah in the Hooghly district and Halisaha in the North 24 Parganas district by surprise, however, the meteorological experts said tornadoes can develop before an approaching cyclone or a major thunderstorm.

Cyclone Yaas: 4 killed, mass evacuations minimise loss

West Bengal launched the biggest evacuation drive the state has ever undertaken before any calamity. More than 1.5 million people were evacuated since Monday and shifted to 14,000 cyclone shelters and relief camps.

'1 crore people affected by Cyclone Yaas, 3 lakh houses damaged': Mamata

The IMD said that the landfall process of Cyclone Yaas is complete. It further said that it will gradually weaken into a severe cyclonic storm in the next three hours, and into a cyclonic storm during the subsequent six hours.

Odisha's special relief commissioner PK Jena told reporters that the landfall process has begun and will take three to four hours to complete.

Over 1 million evacuated, states brace for Yaas landfall today
