Kerala HC rejects former bishop’s plea to adjourn his trial in rape case

In his plea, Franco Mulakkal said in view of the pandemic situation his lawyers are finding it difficult to appear before the trial court in Kottayam and hearing can be resumed after two months once the situation normalises.

Kerala court frames charges against rape-accused ex-Bishop Franco Mulakkal

The Supreme Court had directed Mulakkal to face trial as it dismissed his plea seeking discharge in the rape case lodged against him by the nun belonging to a congregation under Jalandhar diocese, saying there was no merit in his petition.

‘See no merit in your petition’: SC to rape-accused bishop Franco Mulakkal

Franco Mulakkal, while serving as Bishop of Jalandhar Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church, was accused of raping a nun belonging to the Missionaries of Jesus congregation. The complaint was filed with the Kerala police in June 2018.

Kerala nun rape accused Franco Mulakkal tests positive for coronavirus

On Monday, Mulakkal’s counsel informed the Kerala court that his client could not appear as he had been in self quarantine due to his primary contact with a Covid-19 infected person. Today, he tested positive.

Another Kerala nun accuses deposed Jalandhar bishop of sexual harassment

In her statement to the police, the nun, a witness in the ongoing case against Mulakkal, said that she was sexually harassed by the deposed bishop. She said she was forced to show her private parts and the bishop often used to strip during the video calls that he made to her.

In June last year, the survivor, then 43, complained to the police that Mulakkal raped her 13 times between 2014 and 2016.

When the police failed to arrest him, five other nuns staged a sit-in protest in Kochi. Later a special investigation team was set up and it arrested the influential bishop in September after several rounds of questioning.
