It is to be remembered that citizenship is one of the most important rights of a person, said Gauhati high court.

The decision by a division bench of the court has dashed hopes of his supporters across Assam who had been hoping that he would get released soon to take part in the upcoming assembly polls in the state.

The Gauhati High Court lifted the two-month ban imposed by Guwahati police commissioner MP Gupta on ‘Begum Jaan’, telecast by Rengoni TV, on the ground the order didn’t follow laid down rules.

Besides the Rs 25 lakh, the court directed the government to pay Changkai another Rs 15,000 to cover legal expenses, Rs 20,000 under the provision of National Family Benefit Scheme (NFBS) and also reimburse the amount the family spent of taking the deceased to a hospital.

Indigenous bodies in Assam have opposed constitutional safeguards for those who became citizens after 1951. A high-level committee on Clause 6 of Assam Accord is seeking suggestions for such safeguards for Assamese people.

Gauhati HC directs CBI to probe former Assam DGP accused in land grabbing case

The case dates back to 2010 when a complaint of land grabbing was filed at Paltan Bazar police station. Former DGP Sharma and his wife were named as accused in the charge sheet filed in 2014.

Siblings of ‘declared foreigners’ won’t be in Assam NRC, says high court

The names of those siblings and family members (of ‘declared foreigners’) who have been referred to the foreigners tribunals in the state to ascertain if they are genuine Indian citizens will not be included in the updated NRC.
