On Monday, Mulakkal’s counsel informed the Kerala court that his client could not appear as he had been in self quarantine due to his primary contact with a Covid-19 infected person. Today, he tested positive.

The case against Mullakkal surfaced in last June when a 43-year-old nun had complained to the police that he had raped her 13 times between 2014 and 2016.

The letter from the Catholic Church order’s mother superior general on Wednesday came a week after the police suggested certain measures to tighten security at the convent in Kuravilangad (Kottayam) where the victim and others were staying.

The nuns have been on a dharna in Kochi for the last ten days seeking action against the bishop while other activists are on a relay hunger strike in the nuns’ support.

Amid mounting criticism over the police’s delay, a leaked audio conversation surfaced on Saturday in which a priest, reportedly close to the bishop, was heard trying to get another nun close to the victim to get her to withdraw the case.
