Rajapaksa defeated Premadasa, 52, by more than 1.3 million votes, according to the official results. The 70-year-old, who will succeed president Maithripala Sirisena for a five-year term, will be sworn in as the seventh executive president of Sri Lanka on Monday at the ancient north central town of Anuradhapura.

Sri Lanka imposes emergency for fourth month after bombings

President Maithripala Sirisena issued the order to extend the emergency laws for another month, according to a government decree published on Monday. Sirisena said the extension is “in the interest of public security, the preservation of public order and maintenance of supplies and services essential to the life of the community.”
