The Delhi government has allowed its hospitals to refer patients of mucormycosis, popularly known as black fungus, to private hospitals for surgeries if the waiting period is more than seven days

According to data, there were 952 active black fungus cases in Delhi on July 6, as against 833 active cases of Covid-19. The cumulative tally of black fungus cases, on July 6, stood at 1,656.

As many as 562 cases of mucormycosis were reported in the state till date, out of which 76 lost their lives and only 153 were cured fully, the state health department said. The post-Covid complicated was notified as an epidemic in the state last month.

All five new cases of black fungus deaths were recorded at IGIMS, Patna. Two of the patients suffering from the disease were admitted to the hospital, while the rest of the nine were admitted at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in the city.

Maharashtra govt caps rate for black fungus treatment at private hospitals

The admissions of these patients remain the same as the normal Covid-19 patients. While the charges for the routine isolation range from 4,000, 3,000 and 2,400 per day, for A, B and C category areas respectively, it is 7,500, 5,500 and 4,500 for intensive care unit (ICU) without ventilators.

Justices S B Shukre and A G Gharote of the Nagpur bench of the Bombay HC said that as per the figures mentioned in the affidavit filed by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) it appears that Mucormycosis is no longer a rare fungal infection in Nagpur city and assumed the form of an epidemic.
