Addressing a press conference, Railway Board Chairman VK Yadav said so far in the current fiscal, the railways’ earnings from passenger revenue have been Rs 4,600 crore and estimates show that by March 2021, the figure is expected to rise to Rs 15,000 crore.

The Railways’ new “zero-based timetable”, once introduced, will cut down travel time in long distance trains between 30 minutes and six hours on an average.

Farm law protests: Railways assured about removal of blockade along Punjab tracks

“We have been assured blockades along tracks in Punjab will be removed by tomorrow. DG RPF is reviewing safety of the tracks. We will resume all train services once the tracks come back in our control,” the Railway Board Chairman Vinod Kumar Yadav said.

According to the union, the protest is not even for the bonus of this year. The bonus of 2019-20 is due and it is “unfair” to deny last year’s bonus, citing this year’s pandemic, the union has said.

In the order issued by the ministry, the Railway Board said these festival special trains will be operated at a speed of 55 kmph. The schedule and booking of the trains will be finalised by the railway zones.

The fares for these trains will be according to those applicable for special trains, the railways ministry said. It means that ‘special charges’ will be levied, making the tickets costlier by 10-30 per cent.

More than 140,000 vacancies were notified before the lockdown to stop the spread of Covid-19 outbreak was clamped by the government. For these vacancies, 24.2 million applications were received by the board, officials said.
