  • The direct Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) Toy train service was suspended for one and half years due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This is the second attempt to attract tourists as well as to boost the tourism industry.

”Police do not use shotguns. It’s obvious that during yesterday’s protest in Siliguri, armed persons were brought and they fired from firearms,” the police said in a tweet at around 10.30 am, terming the incident “unprecedented”.

Till August 31, the district had recorded 5,056 cases and 75 deaths, which is much higher than what Malda - the most populous district of north Bengal – has recorded. Malda has registered 4,978 cases with only 39 deaths.

An order issued by the state home secretary on Tuesday also said that lockdown would be imposed in four towns – Malda, Raiganj, Siliguri and Cooch Behar from July 15. All these towns are located in north Bengal.
According to a notification by the Home Department, the rigorous containment in these areas would be extended from July 15 to July 19.(PTI)
