A five-judge bench of the Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld the constitutional validity of Aadhaar by a majority judgment. In its verdict, the court held it was not mandatory to link Aadhaar to bank accounts and mobile phones, but maintained that it was mandatory for filing income tax returns.
The UIDAI said that it matches all the biometric of a resident enrolling for Aadhaar with the biometrics of all Aadhaar holders before issuing an Aadhaar, and so claims of introducing information into the database were “completely unfounded.
The Congress party on Tuesday asked the authorities to make “appropriate moves” to check Aadhaar after a website reported that its investigation has found that a “critical security features”of the identity database could have been compromised. HuffPost India reported that its three month-long investigation had found that the Aadhaar database, which contains the biometrics and personal information of over one billion Indians, “had been compromised by a software patch which disables critical security features of the software used to enrol new Aadhaar users”.
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has asked banks to ensure that at least eight enrolments or updations are carried out daily in each stipulated branch from November 1, 2018, to avoid financial disincentives to be applicable from July 2018.

The clarification came hours after a social media storm against UIDAI, with users blaming the agency, which oversees the Aadhaar identification system, for pushing the information to their devices without their consent.

Asserting that core biometrics under Aadhaar were safe, IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said in Rajya Sabha on Friday that the use of the unique identification mechanism has ensured savings of over ₹90,000 crore by eliminating middlemen.
UIDAI, the organisation that maintains Aadhaar database, advised people not to reveal “personally sensitive information”, commenting after TRAI chief RS Sharma put out his 12-digit identity number on Twitter as a security challenge.
Terming it an ‘extraordinary effort’ and ‘original in its thinking’, Nandan Nilekani, the former chairperson of the Unique Identification Development Authority of India (UIDAI), hailed the Justice BN Srikrishna committee’s proposed Personal Data Protection Bill on Friday.
As part of Ayushman Bharat-National Health Protection Mission, the Centre has announced an insurance cover of ₹5 lakh per year for hospitalisation to 10.74 crore families. The notification, published by the Union health ministry on July 4, makes Aadhaar mandatory to avail the benefit.
UIDAI chairman J Satyanarayana said more than ₹90,000 crore are estimated as reported savings or gains by the departments of petroleum and natural gas, food and public distribution, rural development and others.
The UIDAI, the body that manages Aadhaar and its data, said the Aadhaar Act didn’t allow for police being given access to information to investigate crimes, unless it was a question of national security.
The Delhi HC observed that the controller of examination of AIIMS adopted a callous attitude in depriving the student from appearing in the exam because the student’s Aadhaar card could not be scanned at the centre.
