10,000 ‘red scarf’ protesters march against ‘yellow vest’ violence in France

Many protesters joining the rally said they were not against “yellow vest” demands for greater help for France’s poor, but were sick of the clashes and destruction that have marked protests for 11 consecutive Saturdays since mid-November.

French police arrested 1,700 people nationwide and held 1,200 in custody after containing several late-night skirmishes on Saturday. About 179 people were hurt as extreme-right, extreme-left and anarchist elements defied riot forces in Paris.

Macron scraps French fuel tax hike amid violent protests

The “yellow vest” protests began Nov. 17 over the government plan to raise taxes on diesel and gasoline, but by the time Macron bowed to three weeks of violence and abandoned the new fuel tax, protesters were demanding much more.
