Hours after the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her two Sikh bodyguards in October 1984, Sikhs were attacked by mobs in Delhi and several other cities across north India. At many places, leaders of the then ruling Congress party were accused of leading the mobs. According to official figures, nearly 3,000 Sikhs were killed in the violence though other estimates put the toll higher.
