In a country where around 60% of the population is dependent on agriculture, farmer suicides have ranged between 1.4 to 1.8 per 100,000 people over a ten-year period since 2005. National Crime Records Bureau of India (NCRB) data for 2014 shows 5,650 farmer suicides in India. The highest number of farmer suicides was recorded in 2004 when more than 18,200 peasants killed themselves.
