Bigg Boss 11 finale was a 3-hour ad break with Salman Khan. Where was the entertainment?

The Bigg Boss 11 finale was sandwiched between ad breaks, ads on the show and ads of the shows.

When you switch on Bigg Boss 11 on its finale night, the least you can expect is entertainment. There is Salman Khan, well, being Salman Khan. There are four contestants out of the original 18 who have been at each other’s throats for the last three months. And there is Dhinchak Pooja singing dhinchak songs.

True, there are better ways to spend a Sunday evening than watching Bigg Boss 11 finale but sometimes duty calls. So, I womanned up and switched on the telly and realised that I was in the middle of an advertisement – an almost three-hour-long ad spree interspersed with performances by Salman and Bigg Boss contestants.

It proves that the controversial reality show continues to be a magnet for advertisers despite those nose-diving TRPs and that audience doesn’t care if ads come packaged as TV shows as long as a star is doing all the selling.

On Sunday, we got two. There was Salman as the host and Akshay as the guest and about 10 promotions. There might have been more but my attention span went and died on me. So, Salman walked in on the sets and we heard the song from his multi-crore spinner, Tiger Zinda Hai. It was, of course, Swag se karenge sabka swagat. And the man was as good as his word; he welcomed everyone with swag and the same song. It played over and over again and Salman also performed on it on the show. So if you have not watched the film yet, do watch it and give Bhai full marks for persistence.

The real promo machinery kicked into action with Padmaavat trailer being played. Deepika Padukone has come inside the Bigg Boss house to promote her film when it was supposed to release on December 1. Due to delay in its release and how the makers are going low on promotions, the film only got a trailer and no star pushing it this time.

Bigg Boss is an equal opportunity ad pusher, it seems. After Padmaavat, Akshay Kumar and Padman promotions cycled in. The film is clashing with Padmaavat on box office on January 25. Akshay danced, entered the house, explained the film’s theme about menstrual hygiene and even helped evict a contestant.

He also helped Salman promote ecycles made by his brand, Being Human, and a mobile phone brand.

Now that Bigg Boss 11 is over, Colors also used this opportunity to promote its next two shows – India’s Rising Star and Belan Wali Bahu. While the judges of Rising Star -- Diljeet Dosanjh, Shankar Mahadevan and Monali Thakur – spoke about the show, the first lot of contestants of the show performed while live voting took place.

Belan Wali Bahu’s cast also walked in to speak about their show and the titular belan.

The promos, and my patience, ended about 15 minutes before the show was supposed to end. Then it was time for an ad break.
