The prank that actor Parineeti Chopra pulled on singer Ali Quli Mirza on a reality TV show episode on Sunday seems to have backfired. The actor has now clarified her stance on the matter, saying she meant no offence.
It all started when Parineeti, Ranveer Singh and Ali Zafar went to the Bigg Boss house to promote their next film. The actors were dancing with the contestants, when Parineeti accused Mirza of touching her "inappropriately" — much in the same manner as show contestant Sonali Raut had reported, albeit in all seriousness, last week.
While Ali was reprimanded after Raut’s accusation, Parineeti’s allegation — which show host Salman said was a "prank:" — left everyone shocked. Parineeti later apologised to Mirza, who seemed embarrassed about being made the target.
Following the incident, social media was abuzz with criticism directed at the show, and at Parineeti, for trivialising a matter as serious as sexual harassment and running down Raut’s serious allegation.
While the channel and the production house remained mum on the issue, Parineeti told us, "The prank that the three of us played on Mirza was an idea given to us by the creative team of Bigg Boss. We, as actors, simply executed it, trusting their judgement. The intention was never to hurt sentiments or trivialise the matter of inappropriate behaviour towards women. We apologise to those who got hurt, but maintain that this was a prank, and should be not be taken so seriously. On a lighter note, we are big fans of the show and watch each and every episode. At the end of the day, we all sent pizzas to the contestants to make it up to them."
