Pratyusha Banerjee, who was just 24 when she allegedly committed suicide on Friday, was one of the most recognised names on Indian TV.

And it was the hit serial Balika Vadhu that introduced the talented actress to viewers for the first time.

Till then, Avika Gor was playing the character of Anandi, a role that became associated with her.

It was a daunting task for Pratyusha as she had to create her own space without taking anything away from Avika’s legacy. This she did with panache, marking the start of a fruitful career on TV.

Born on August 10, 1992 in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, Pratyusha did her early education in local schools before moving to Kolkata for higher studies.

The turning point in her life came when she was selected to replace Avika in Balika Vadhu through an SMS poll.

The overnight change in lifestyle brought out the best in Pratyusha and she became the most sought after ‘bahu’ on the small screen.

After a successful stint of three years, she parted ways with the channel and producers of Balika Vadhu in 2013.

She decided to try her luck in the popular reality show Bigg Boss.

However, it wasn’t her first tryst with reality shows. She had featured in the fourth season of Kitchen Champions (2012) on Colors.

She was also a participant on Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa season 5, but it was Bigg Boss 7 (2013) that brought a new side of her personality to the world.

The feisty Pratyusha on Bigg Boss 7 became an instant favourite with many, but also left others shocked on seeing her fighting and screaming on the show.

A series of shows followed in 2014 and 2015, but she was mostly invisible from TV in 2014. She returned with Sony’s Hum Hain Na and went on to play important roles in Itna Karo Na Mujhe Pyaar and Gulmohar Grand.

By now, the image of the quintessential ‘bahu’ had taken a backseat and Pratyusha was more known for several controversies surrounding her life.

One of them was her public spat with then boyfriend Makrand Malhotra in 2013. She filed a complaint of verbal abuse and death threats with the Mumbai Police against him.

Even earlier this year, Pratyusha claimed that four policemen misbehaved with her in her Kandivali apartment in suburban Mumbai.

On the work front, she kept getting meaty roles in shows such as Sasural Simar Ka and Kumkum Bhagya. She also did reality shows like Comedy Classes.
