India welcomes New Year

Indians flocked to temples, monuments and markets to welcome 2012. On the last day of 2011, the Vaishno Devi shrine at Katra in Jammu and Kashmir was abuzz with pilgrims, who had come to seek the deity's blessings for the New Year. Meanwhile, in the national capital, shoppers flocked to popular markets, hunting for colourful greeting cards and gifts for their near and dear ones. At Amritsar in Punjab, the iconic Golden Temple was lit up to ring in 2012. Tourists made the most of the winter holiday by visiting the most sought-after destination in the country, the Taj Mahal at Agra in Uttar Pradesh, to mark the New Year.
