Suriya first met Jyothika on the sets of Poovellam Kettupar. After dating for several years, the two got married on September 11, 2006.

Jyothika’s efforts to learn the Tamil language for her role in Poovellam Kettupar and her dedication to her work attracted Suriya’s attention, forming a bond between them.

In an interview, Jyothika revealed what drew her towards the Kanguva actor. “The reason I decided that I wanted Surya for myself was the respect he gave me (...) He spoke to me very casually. That appealed to me a lot."

Despite his father’s disapproval on grounds of religious differences, they got engaged and the rest is history!

They were blessed with a daughter, Diya, and a son, Dev.

Besides working on seven films together, the couple has also undertaken several philanthropic initiatives.

Jyothika showered praises on her husband in an interview, "He is very sincere as a father. Not just as a father, even as a husband, he is very sincere."
