Dubai floods: Airport, malls, metro stations flooded; schools shut. See pics

Heavy rain across the United Arab Emirates (UAE) caused widespread flooding on April 16.

The torrential rain forced Dubai International Airport to suspend operations and divert several incoming flights.

Dubai International Airport halted operations due to the chaos caused by rainstorms. Flights were delayed and cancelled, and the roads en route to the airport were severely flooded.

Heavy thunderstorms which caused waterlogging in the UAE, better known for its arid climate and intense summer heat, led to the shutting down of schools and brought traffic to a standstill.

The Dubai government also asked its employees to work from home, as unusually heavy rains battered the roads.

Flagship shopping centres Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates suffered flooding, bringing business to a halt.

According to images and videos posted on social media, the water was ankle-deep in at least one of the Dubai Metro stations.

Earlier, during the COP28 UN climate talks in 2023, Oman and the UAE warned that global warming is likely to lead to more flooding.
