What is Nipah virus, its symptoms and treatment

 The Kerala health department on September 11 put a health alert in Kozhikode after two people who died due to 'unnatural' deaths in the district were suspected to have been infected with the Nipah virus

 Earlier, Kozhikode witnessed a massive Nipah outbreak in 2021 and the first Nipah case was reported in 2018

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the Nipah virus is a zoonotic virus, which is transmitted from animals to humans. It can also be transmitted through contaminated food or directly between people

It is transmitted from bats and pigs and is fatal for humans and animals

Symptoms of Nipah virus

The symptoms of the Nipah virus are similar to COVID-19 like cough, sore throat, dizziness, drowsiness, muscle pain, headache and tiredness

Severe symptoms of the Nipah virus include encephalitis (swelling of the brain), stiff neck, sensitivity to light, mental confusion and seizure

Nipah virus treatment

There is no definitive treatment for the Nipah virus but there are treatments for the symptoms that a patient may exhibit

Make sure to consult your doctor if you notice any Nipah virus symptoms and follow the prescribed medication

Precautions

Avoid eating fruits that have fallen on the ground as they can be contaminated. Avoid coming in contact with infected animals and humans

Wash your hands with soap and water frequently to prevent the spread of the infection

Follow the quarantine measures and isolate yourself if you are infected. It can help prevent the virus from spreading
