55 new cities from across the world have been added to the UNESCO Creative Cities Network on World Cities Day observed on November 2, 2023.

The UNESCO Creative Cities Network is a network of cities identified for harnessing culture and creativity as part of their development strategies, and displaying innovative practices in human-centred urban planning.

Here are six Indian cities that feature in the list of UNESCO Creative Cities Network.

Gwalior

This beautiful city in Madhya Pradesh has been added to the list in the creative field of music. The Gwalior Gharana music is one of the widely acclaimed traditional music in India.

Kozhikode

This city in Kerala earned its place in the creative field of literature in UNESCO's list. Kozhikode has more than 500 libraries and more than 50 publishers. It also hosts the annual Kerala Literature Festival that adds creative value to the city.

Varanasi

Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh registered its name in UNESCO's creative cities list in the creative field of music. Its flagship initiative is to develop the Sangeet Sankul Music School that envisions to keep the Guru-Shishya musical tradition alive.

Srinagar

This mesmerising place in Jammu has been recorded in the creative field of crafts and folk art. This place is home to unique handicrafts and handloom products created by local artisans.

Jaipur

Jaipur in Rajasthan is also listed in the field of crafts and folk arts. This place features the vibrant art and craft of Rajasthan like painting, carving and jewellery making. It is also known for showcasing its art at the Jaipur International Heritage Festival.

Chennai

Situated in Tamil Nadu, Chennai made it to the list in the creative field of music. Known for its 6,000 years old traditional carnatic music, this city has a deep-rooted musical legacy worth exploring.
