9 essential foot care tips for diabetes patients to prevent infections

Diabetes increases the risk of foot infections. Here are proactive tips to manage your foot health and prevent complications.

Wash your feet regularly: Clean your feet daily with warm soapy water to remove dirt and prevent infection buildup.

Dry your feet thoroughly: Ensure feet, especially between toes, are dried well. Use surgical alcohol on damp areas to prevent fungal infections.

Moisturize your feet: Apply moisturizing cream (avoid mineral oil-based products) to keep feet soft, but avoid applying between toes.

Trim nails carefully: Cut nails straight and avoid trimming sides to prevent painful ingrown toenails, common for diabetics.

Handle hard skin gently: Remove hard skin with a wet pumice stone, not by cutting. Avoid painful corns or calluses.

Wear clean socks daily: Change socks every day to keep feet clean and dry, reducing infection risk.

Choose proper footwear: Wear shoes that fit well and offer good support. For high heels, wear comfortable shoes to and from work.

Get moving for circulation: Exercise regularly to improve circulation, aiming for at least 30 minutes a day for better foot health.

Seek medical advice if needed: If you experience foot pain or discomfort, consult a podiatrist promptly to avoid complications.
