Lost wonders: Extinct animals we dream of bringing back to life

What if we could turn back time? These extinct animals capture our imagination and remind us of nature’s lost wonders.

Dodo: Once found in Mauritius, the dodo symbolizes extinction. Hunting and habitat loss drove this flightless bird to vanish by the late 1600s.

Woolly mammoth: These giant, furry relatives of elephants roamed icy tundras until they disappeared around 4,000 years ago.

Tasmanian tiger: The striped thylacine, native to Australia, was hunted to extinction in the 20th century, though sightings are still rumored.

Great auk: A penguin-like bird of the North Atlantic, the great auk became extinct due to overhunting in the 1800s.

Saber-toothed tiger: These prehistoric predators with iconic fangs ruled the Ice Age before disappearing thousands of years ago.

Megalodon: The colossal shark, over 50 feet long, dominated oceans millions of years ago and inspires awe to this day.
