The young people who attended the first World Youth Forum of the United Nations System in Vienna, Austria, in 1991 came up with the concept for International Youth Day

The World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth, adopted a resolution designating August 12 as International Youth Day in 1998

The fifty-fourth session of The UN General Assembly, which was held on December 17, 1999, then approved the resolution to declare International Youth Day
