Every year on August 12, International Youth Day is celebrated to raise awareness of youth concerns and to recognise the potential of young people in the global society
Here is a brief history of the International Youth Day
The young people who attended the first World Youth Forum of the United Nations System in Vienna, Austria, in 1991 came up with the concept for International Youth Day
The Forum urged that an International Youth Day be designated, particularly for fundraising and promotional purposes
The World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth, adopted a resolution designating August 12 as International Youth Day in 1998
The fifty-fourth session of The UN General Assembly, which was held on December 17, 1999, then approved the resolution to declare International Youth Day
The first International Youth Day was hence observed on August 12, 2000
The Assembly recommended that public information activities be organized to support the Day as a way to promote better awareness of the World Programme of Action for Youth
Furthermore, each year the observance of International Youth Day is marked with a theme, relevant to the times
