Gandhi Jayanti: 5 rare pics of Bapu capturing India’s freedom struggle

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, popularly known as Mahatma Gandhi, is regarded as the Father of the Nation.

Here are five rare pictures showcasing key moments in his life and his role in India’s Independence.

Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated on 2 October each year to honour the birth of Mahatma Gandhi.

On March 12, 1930, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi defied British rule by breaking the Salt Law during the Dandi March.

On March 11, 1930, Bapu set off on the Dandi March alongside leaders like Vallabhbhai Patel and Dr Rajendra Prasad.

Mahatma Gandhi also worked to improve the lives of untouchables and gave them a new name, 'Harijan,' which means 'children of God.

He played a key role in pacifying people and averting the Hindu-Muslim riots as tensions rose before and during the partition of the country.

Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated on January 30, 1948 by Nathuram Godse, a Hindu nationalist.
