Animals with the longest lifespans

Some animals live far longer than most people imagine.

Glass sponges are the oldest animals known to science. They live deep in the ocean and can survive for over 10,000 years, with some possibly reaching 15,000 years.

Black corals are colourful and grow in deep ocean waters. Some types can live up to 5,000 years.

Found in the Caribbean Sea, giant barrel sponges can live for more than 2,300 years.

Greenland sharks are the longest-living fish with bones. Some are believed to be over 400 years old, and a few may even reach 500 years.

Tortoises are well known for their long lives. The Aldabra giant tortoise can live for well over 100 years.

Bowhead whales live in Arctic waters. They can live for over 200 years.

Rougheye rockfish can live more than 200 years, while lobsters may reach 100 years.

Albatrosses are long-living seabirds. One named Wisdom is about 73 years old, making her the oldest wild bird ever recorded.
