Do cats recognise their names? 8 fascinating facts

Cats know how to catch mice, react to a can opener-and maybe know their names too. Let’s find out.

A study in Japan tested whether cats know their names, even when strangers call them.

Researchers from Tokyo’s Sophia University observed 78 house cats and cafe cats.

Both owners and strangers were asked to call the cats by name during the test.

The team watched for ear twitches, head turns or tail swishes as signs of recognition.

In four different experiments, cats reacted more to their own names than other words.

Cats could still tell when their name was said, even after hearing other names.

Cats might be quieter about it, but yes- they may know when you're calling them.
