Galactic wonders: 7 gorgeous galaxy pics captured by NASA Hubble

A galaxy is a vast collection of stars, planets, gas, dust, and dark matter, all bound together by gravity.

Galaxies are generally classified into three types: spiral, like the Milky Way; elliptical, which are more rounded; and irregular, which lack a defined shape.

Launched by NASA in 1990, the Hubble Space Telescope orbits Earth, capturing detailed images of distant galaxies, stars, and planets.

Galaxies vary greatly in size. Some dwarf galaxies contain just a few billion stars, while larger ones, like the Andromeda Galaxy, can have over a trillion stars.

NASA research suggests that most of the mass in galaxies is not visible. This unseen matter, known as dark matter, makes up about 85% of the universe’s total matter.

The Milky Way is our home galaxy, a barred spiral galaxy containing over 100 billion stars.

The Whirlpool Galaxy (M51) is a classic spiral galaxy known for its stunning spiral structure and bright core.

The Triangulum Galaxy (M33) is a member of the local group and is the third-largest galaxy in the group after the Milky Way and Andromeda.

The Sombrero Galaxy (M104) is a spiral galaxy located about 28 million light-years away in the constellation Virgo.

The Cartwheel Galaxy is a unique ring galaxy located about 500 million light-years away in the constellation Sculptor.
