Before people went to space, animals helped test if it was safe. Here are some amazing stories of animals that made space history.

In the early days, scientists didn’t know if humans could survive in space. So, they sent animals to test how weightlessness would affect living beings.
On 20 September 1951, a monkey named Yorick went 2,36,000 feet into space. He returned safely and became the first monkey to survive a space flight.

In 1952, Patricia and Mike, two monkeys from the Philippines, were launched 36 miles up. This was the first time primates reached such a high altitude.

Between 1951 and 1952, Soviet scientists sent nine dogs into space using R-1 rockets.
