Powerful photos of street dogs surviving Delhi streets

The Supreme Court has ordered all stray dogs in Delhi-NCR to be rounded up within eight weeks and kept in shelters.

Local civic bodies will build special shelters where the dogs will be housed.

According to the order, no captured dogs will be released back onto the streets.

A rise in stray dog attacks in Delhi-NCR prompted the court to take action.

Anyone hindering the capture drive will face contempt proceedings, said Justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan.

The judges said removing dogs from the streets is the only way to make children and elderly people feel safe.

Once a complaint is made, authorities have four hours to capture the dog.

Local bodies in Delhi-NCR have been directed to establish dog shelters without delay to meet the eight-week target.
