Republic Day 2025: Why is January 26 so special?

Discover the significance behind this historic day for India.

On 26 January 1950, India adopted its Constitution, declaring itself a Sovereign Democratic, and Republic state.

The first Republic Day began with a 21-gun salute and the hoisting of the National Flag by Dr. Rajendra Prasad. 

From that 26 January was declared a national holiday and recognised as Republic Day across India.

The Constitution empowered Indian citizens to choose their government, laying the foundation of democracy. 

Dr. Rajendra Prasad took his oath as the first President of India at the Durbar Hall in Government House.

After the oath, Dr. Prasad embarked on a five-mile drive to Irwin Stadium to mark the ocassion.

Republic Day stands as a symbol of India's journey to becoming a sovereign and democratic nation.
