Unusual ways that animals sleep

Not all animals sleep the same way. Some rest while floating, others sleep standing up, and a few only rest part of their brain.

Dolphins sleep by turning off one side of their brain at a time.

Sea otters sleep while floating in the water.

Elephants only sleep for about two hours a day. They take short naps, often standing up, especially in the wild.

Koalas sleep up to 18-22 hours a day.

Frogs have amazing sleep tricks. They hibernate in winter and even ‘sleep’ in summer (called estivation) to survive heat or dryness.

Horses can sleep standing up.
