What astronauts must master before going to space

Astronauts need years of training before they can live and work in space. Let’s see how they get ready.

Training starts at the Johnson Space Center.

Space has no gravity. Astronauts must learn how to move, work, and live in a weightless environment.

Astronauts use life-sized models to practise things like launch, landing, and using the space station.

Astronaut pilots fly a jet that copies the space shuttle’s steep landing. It helps them get used to it.

In the Sonny Carter Facility, there’s a huge pool. Astronauts wear suits and train underwater to feel weightless.

Under the water, astronauts practise walking outside the station on real-size models of space modules.

After all this training, astronauts are ready to work in space, floating, fixing, and exploring far above Earth.
