What is Guillain-Barré Syndrome and how can it affect you?

According to National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, Guillain-Barré Syndrome is a rare neurological disorder.

It occurs when the immune system attacks the peripheral nervous system, disrupting signals from the brain and spinal cord to the body.

GBS begins suddenly and can worsen over hours, days, or weeks.

Weakness is a key symptom of GBS.

It often starts in the feet and spreads upwards, affecting legs, arms, face, and even breathing muscles.

Most people with GBS reach their weakest stage within two weeks of symptoms starting.

GBS can cause unusual sensations like tingling, crawling sensations under the skin or pain, especially in the back or legs.

GBS can affect anyone, regardless of age. However, it is more common in adults, especially those over 50.
