El Mencho was the leader of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). Mexico's defense ministry said that Oseguera was left seriously injured in a shootout in Jalisco, and he died during an air transfer to Mexico City.
Following El Mencho's death, 25 Mexican National Guard troops were killed as security personnel clashed with his cartel members, Security Secretary Omar Garcia Harfuch said, according to AFP.
Cars were torched, gunmen blocked highways and airport operations were hit. Schools in Guadalajara have also been closed due to the clashes. 30 suspected members of Oseguera's criminal organisation were also killed.
The security operation in the state comes as the Mexican government faces increasing pressure on cartels following threats of a US intervention. The operation also comes amid constant tariff threats from US President Donald Trump.
India, Canada and US issue advisory
In response to the violence and clashes in Mexico, the United States, Canada and India have issued “stay in shelter” warning for its citizens in the Latin American country.
In the US and Canada, several airlines have also cancelled their flights to Mexico, especially to Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta.
Several killed during operation, violence
Along with El Mencho, four others will killed during the raid in Jalisco. The death toll during the raid later increased to 7 with the death of three others, including El Mencho, who were critically wounded.
Furthermore, according to an AP report citing state officials, at least seven National Guard members were killed in Tapalpa and Zapopan. A jail guard was also killed at a lockup in Puerto Vallarta when prisoners rioted and an agent from the Jalisco state prosecutor’s office was killed in Guadalajara.
