Pakistan may reconsider its decision to go ahead with executing prisoners on death row, a newspaper report said on Sunday.

A report in The News carried on Sunday said prime minister Nawaz Sharif has ordered an immediate halt to the carrying out of the death penalty in the country.

The move comes after a threat by the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan which said it would go to war with the government if its members, who are currently in death row, are executed.

Officials have denied that they have bowed to pressure from the TTP and instead said that the prime minister wanted to consult the president on the matter “before moving ahead.”

The News quoted officials as saying that as the date of executions was approaching, and the president was out of the country, the prime minister directed the interior ministry to hold everything regarding the execution of death sentences till a meeting takes place between him and the head of state.
