New Delhi, April 16, 2025 - PM SHRI Kendriya Vidyalaya, Sainik Vihar, in collaboration with Educart, organised a hands-on teacher training workshop on “Green School - Integrating Sustainability in Education.” Led by CBSE Resource Person Ms. Neera Kohli and moderated by Educart’s Head of Academics, Mr. Nishant Lakra, the session saw the participation of 50 teachers eager to embed environmental stewardship into their daily teaching practices.

The workshop opened with an overview of the “Green School” concept, emphasising that sustainability must move beyond standalone lessons and become a guiding principle across subjects. Ms. Neera Kohli highlighted how schools can model responsible behaviour by involving students directly in activities such as campus sustainability audits assessing energy use, water conservation, and waste management. “When students lead audits, they develop ownership and practical understanding,” she noted, urging educators to view these exercises as both learning opportunities and community-building initiatives.

Participants then engaged in project-based learning exercises, discussing ways to integrate environmental themes into language, science, social studies and even mathematics lessons. For instance, a language class might analyse local environmental narratives, while math lessons could use data from the audit to teach statistics. Such cross-disciplinary integration was presented as key to making sustainability an organic part of the curriculum rather than an add-on topic.

Mr. Nishant Lakra underscored alignment with global and national frameworks, pointing out the relevance of UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Quality Education (Goal 4), Responsible Consumption (Goal 12), and Climate Action (Goal 13). He explained how CPD sessions focused on climate literacy can empower teachers to keep pace with evolving policy expectations and student interests. “Embedding SDG-related projects ensures that classrooms remain dynamic and connected to real-world challenges,” he said.

A significant portion of the workshop addressed the formation and guidance of student-led eco-clubs. Educators discussed best practices for mentoring such clubs, from planning tree plantations and clean-up drives to organising awareness campaigns in the local community. Teachers shared ideas on collaborating with neighbouring schools or local bodies to amplify impact, reinforcing the notion that schools serve as catalysts for broader environmental action.

Throughout the session, Ms. Kohli and Mr. Lakra encouraged reflective dialogue. Teachers exchanged experiences of past initiatives, both successes and hurdles and brainstormed solutions to common challenges such as limited resources or sustaining long-term engagement. This peer learning component was widely appreciated: one teacher remarked, “Hearing colleagues’ practical tips made the concepts feel achievable rather than theoretical.”

The workshop concluded with a commitment exercise, where each educator outlined one or two concrete steps to implement in the coming term whether launching a water-saving campaign, integrating sustainability topics into upcoming lessons, or initiating an eco-club project. Feedback collected at the end was overwhelmingly positive, with teachers citing inspiration, clarity on actionable strategies, and renewed motivation to champion environmental education.

School leadership expressed gratitude for the initiative. The principal noted that such training aligns with the institution’s vision of holistic education and looks forward to further partnerships with Educart on topics ranging from technology integration to life skills. Plans are already underway for follow-up sessions and resource-sharing to support teachers in sustaining green initiatives.

By equipping educators with practical tools, reflective frameworks, and collaborative ideas, the workshop at PM SHRI Kendriya Vidyalaya marked a significant step toward nurturing environmentally responsible learners and embedding sustainability at the heart of the school experience.
