Training a dog takes patience, kindness, and the right methods. Let’s look at what not to do according to Companion Animal Psychology.

Avoid using shock, prong, or choke collars.

Aversive tools make dogs feel scared and unsure. This can weaken your relationship with them.

Pulling or yanking the lead is another aversive method. It teaches dogs through fear, not trust.

Saying “good dog” is great, but it works best when followed by a treat your dog loves.

Dogs need good rewards. Try bits of cheese, chicken, or dog treats to keep them motivated.

Just because your dog does something once doesn’t mean they’ve fully learned it. Repeat and practise.

Dogs may listen at home but struggle in parks. Train in many settings to build strong habits.
