High blood pressure or hypertension is the number one cause of avoidable deaths worldwide—nearly 10 million people die from it.

Ten out of 3 people in urban areas and 1 out of 4 people in rural areas suffer from hypertension, but are not aware of it. No wonder hypertension is labelled as a silent killer. It leads to heart attack, paralytic strokes, renal failure, blindness, dementia, and sexual inadequacy.

Are you at risk?

There is only one way of knowing it. Yes, measure your BP periodically, more so as you age and if you have a family history of diabetes.

You can prevent hypertension by following these measures:

  1. Consume not more than 1 tsp of salt per day.
  2. Stop tobacco consumption in any form.
  3. Exercise for 30 minutes every day.
  4. Maintain an ideal body weight.

If your BP is >130/80, then you suffer from hypertension and need to make lifestyle changes. If it is beyond 140/90, then you will need medication from your doctor, over and above lifestyle modifications.
