Here’s Deepanjana Pal’s list of 10 movies to watch that define this era. See how she made her picks

1 Arth (1982):

Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil delivered powerhouse performances as the wife and “other woman” respectively.

2 Baton Baton Mein (1979):

With the Western Railway playing a key role in Nancy (Tina Ambani) and Tony’s (Amol Palekar) romance, love is quite literally a journey in this film.

3 Chandni (1989):

Sridevi is at her dazzling, charismatic best in a film that marked director Yash Chopra’s return to the romantic musical genre

4 Gol Maal (1979):

Directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, this delightfully nonsensical comedy had a fantastic cast (including Utpal Dutt and Amol Palekar) as well as cameos by the likes of Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha.

5 Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983):

Almost 30 years since its release, Kundan Shah’s dark comedy about corruption and dishonesty remains relevant and hilarious.

6 Khoon Bhari Maang (1988):

Rakesh Roshan’s thriller, starring Rekha and Kabir Bedi, is a glittering showcase for the camp aesthetic of the ’80s

7 Masoom (1983):

Starring Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi, this is a heartbreaking look at what happens when the past catches up with a man in the form of a son he didn’t know he had.

8 Mr India (1987):

Not only did Shekhar Kapur’s film give us a bona fide desi vigilante hero, it also gave us a legendary villain in Mogambo.

9 Pushpak (1987):

The film has, among other things, an unemployed graduate, a magician and a contract killer. What it doesn’t have is dialogue. Director and writer Singeetam Srinivasa Rao’s silent movie is a wonder.

10 Utsav (1984):

Sensual, gorgeous and witty, Rekha is everything and more in this drama set in ancient India, directed by Girish Karnad.
