A woman allegedly mowed down two people on a highway in Haryana in a case of drink driving on Wednesday, police said.
Preeti Bhardwaj, a 36-year-old resident of Rohini in Delhi, hit five labourers on a national highway in Karnal’s Gharaunda area, killing two of them on the spot, eyewitnesses said.
“Two labourers were killed and three injured by a speeding car of a drunk woman...,” local police station in-charge Rajbir Singh Yadav said.
A medical report to determine if Bhardwaj was drunk was awaited.
Eyewitnesses said the incident took place around 11:30am when Bhardwaj’s Swift car hit the men when they were working near a flyover.
Bhardwaj was alone in the car when the accident took place. She was on her way to Kaithal from Delhi via Karnal to visit a relative, officials said.
The deceased were identified as Rajkumar and Bansi Lal of Staundi village of Karnal. They were tossed in the air due to the impact and landed on the windshield.
The men were hired by a contractor who carried out maintenance work for the National Highway Authority of India.
Bhardwaj allegedly did not stop the car after the accident, but people chased her down. She allegedly misbehaved with the people who tried to stop her.
Police said the woman was in custody and an FIR was registered in the case. Police said Bhardwaj’s parents had arrived in Karnal and were in shock.
