Gold, diamond jewellery stolen from deputy commissioner’s house in Chandigarh
The deputy commissioner’s wife told the police that the thieves entered the house after breaking open the main gate’s lock and ransacked an almirah to steal multiple pieces of gold and diamond jewellery
Thieves struck at the house of the Tarn Taran deputy commissioner (DC) in Sector 7 and decamped with gold and diamond jewellery worth lakhs, police said on Monday.
Dr Mrinalini C Kumar, wife of Tarn Taran DC Moneesh Kumar, told the police that she is a medical officer and pathologist at Government Multi-Specialty Hospital, Sector 16.
She said she and her husband were away at Hyderabad from July 19 to 24. While picking her up from the Chandigarh airport on Sunday, their driver informed her about a theft at their house.
The thieves entered the house after breaking open the main gate’s lock. They ransacked an almirah after breaking its lock, and stole multiple pieces of gold and diamond jewellery, she said.
Among the ornaments stolen were seven gold/diamond sets, 10-12 gold/diamond rings, around 10 gold chains, three diamond bangles, five gold bangles, around 20 silver coins, six gold coins, a diamond mangalsutra, three diamond rings, a gold chain and a pair of gold/diamond studs, besides four watches.
On Dr Kumar’s complaint, police registered a case under Sections 380 (theft) and 457 (house trespass) of the Indian Penal Code at the Sector-26 police station and launched an investigation.
