Regularisation of contractual staff: After Ludhiana MC chief’s assurance, employees’ union calls off agitation

After the union submitted a memorandum regarding regularisation of contractual staffwith authorities on August 23 and gave an ultimatum of three days to the officials, Ludhiana MC chief conducted a meeting with the employees’ union at the MC’s Zone-D office on Thursday.

After getting an assurance from municipal corporation (MC) commissioner Shena Aggarwal regarding the regularisation of contractual employees, the municipal employees’ union— Municipal Employees’ Sangharsh Committee, called off their proposed agitation on Friday.

As the union has been demanding regularisation of around 3,600 contractual employees and inclusion of 394 drivers, beldars in the list, the officials accepted their demand and stated that required resolutions would soon be tabled during the general House meeting of Ludhiana MC for the final approval. As the union has been demanding regularisation of around 3,600 contractual employees and inclusion of 394 drivers, beldars in the list, the officials accepted their demand and stated that required resolutions would soon be tabled during the general House meeting of MC for the final approval.

President of the union Jasdev Sekhon said an inquiry was going on regarding the lists of contractual employees to be regularised. They have been assured that the inquiry would be completed within 15 days. The union also took up the matter of delayed payment of salaries to the staff.

Chairperson Ashwani Sahota said authorities have assured that contractual employees would receive appointment letters before Valmiki Jayanti on October 9. The union has now decided to defer the agitation and no protest would now be held on Friday, he added.
