Ludhiana roads flooded after fresh rain battering

Heavy rainfall that lasted well over three hours brought the lives of city residents to a standstill as water inundated city roads — already marred by potholes.

Several arterial roads in the city Chandigarh road, Ferozepur road, Pakhowal road, Ghumar Mandi, Mall road, Dugri road, old GT road, Mall road, Transport road, Hambran road, Atam Nagar, Dholewal Chowk and gill road were left inundated leading to a traffic disturbance and blockades.
Along with the low-lying areas along the Buddha Nullah including Chander Nagar, Haibowal several posh areas including Sarabha Nagar, Maya Nagar, and Gurdev Nagar also faced problems as a major portion of the roads have been dug up for laying water pipes for canal-based water supply projects.
Multiple incidents of cars getting stuck in sinkholes near the under-construction portion of Ferozepur road were also reported. With the Talab Bazaar drain (a monsoon drain) near Bhadaur house lying choked, waterlogging was reported in the area.
Balwinder Singh, who owns a showroom on mall road, said, “Despite being the most prominent road in the city, the stretch is not free of waterlogging, residents are finding it hard to enter the commercial establishments as water has accumulated on the road.”
Vinay Pal, a resident of Dugri, said even as the road between the bus stand to Dugri has been rebuilt the problem of waterlogging continues to haunt residents. He added that the authorities should have improved the storm sewer lines.
Speaking of the preparations, the superintending engineer (operations and maintenance cell) said civic body teams are on standby, while road gullies and sewer lines are functional.
Buddha Nullah circling the drain
Even as crores are being spent for cleaning and rejuvenation of the Buddha Nullah, the rains on Thursday further exacerbated the pollution at the water body as piles of garbage were seen floating in the water body.
The garbage which had been piled along with banks of Buddha Nullah violators flowed into the waterbody due to rains. A resident of Kundanpuri, Sunita Rani said, “It is just the first rain of the season, and the situation has made it clear how prepared the authorities are.”
