The Ghaziabad police on Tuesday morning recovered the body of a minor girl from near the Upper Ganga Canal in Muradnagar and said the child was possibly murdered elsewhere and the body dumped in the isolated canal area.
According to police, the body was discovered by locals near the Sonia Vihar Regulator and the police were informed. A team collected the required evidence from the spot and sent the body for a post-mortem examination.
“The girl is aged about 5-6 years and our teams are trying to establish her identity. The autopsy has been ordered and we have also sought to know from the medical examiner whether the girl was sexually assaulted. It appears that the body was brought to the canal area from elsewhere,” said Sunil Kumar Singh, assistant commissioner of police (Modinagar).
Police sources said the body had injury marks but the cause of death is yet to be ascertained and investigators are waiting for the autopsy result.
The Upper Ganga Canal is an isolated stretch with a two-lane road running parallel to it, connecting Muradnagar with Haridwar over a distance of 111 kilometres. It has dense vegetation and forestry alongside the banks, police said.
