Vinil Mathew's Hasee Toh Phasee hits theatres on Friday.

Vinil Mathew's debut directorial venture is about confused Nikhil (Sidharth) who bumps into eccentric mad scientist Meeta (Parineeti) years after their first meeting and sparks fly.

While most critics say that the subject of the Siddharth Malhotra, Parineeti Chopra-starrer is formulaic but Vinil Mathew and the actress have impressed one and all.

Film critic Shubhra Gupta writes for India Express, "The smart, varying sensibilities of co-producers Karan Johar and Anurag Kashyap, a likeable leading man, and a crackerjack heroine. What it doesn't have is a coherent story."

Saibal Chatterjee (NDTV) writes, "Hasee has all the ingredients of a Karan Johar production, including a robust Punjabi wedding song of the kind that we’ve heard on umpteen occasions before. But the tentative romance that blooms between the hero and the winsome would-be bride’s edgy elder sister isn’t all candyfloss and that is probably attributable to the involvement in the project of Anurag Kashyap and gang."

Mihir Fadnavis writes for Firstpost, "Everything about Hasee Toh Phasee's script is formulaic, but Matthew manages to find a new way to tell his story, finding a uniquely humorous tone in the formula."

Saurabh Dwivedi (India Today) writes, "Director Vinil Mathew never lets the story lose track."

Parineeti Chopra's acting skills are once again wonderfully showcased in the movie. Saurabh Dwivedi says, "I'm a big fan of Parineeti Chopra thanks to the film. First her tomboy look, and then her girly look, and her habit of popping pills: all prove that she's got the acting chops."

Mihir Fadnavis adds, "Chopra's performances in Ishaqzaade and Shuddh Desi Romance set the bar pretty high and with Hasee Toh Phasee, she's outdone herself."

Shubhra Gupta, however, is not as floored, "She's given a reason to be like that, but I didn't buy it. Nor her over-the-top act, which overshadows her natural easy self."

Hasee Toh Phasee is certainly an entertaining film with Parineeti giving one of her best performances. The story has little new to offer but Vinil Mathew has made the film "entertaining, youthful, refreshing".
