Earlier, it was supposed to hit the screens with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s now superhit film Padmaavat on January 25. But, was it a good match for Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone-starrer?
Let’s take a look at the first weekend collection of Padmaavat.
Padmaavat opened to paid previews on January 24, a Thursday, and garnered Rs 5 crore. It was a morale boosting number given the environment surrounding the film’s release and the limited numbers of theatres allotted to it.
In the next three days, Padmaavat went on to gather Rs 83 crore.
Looking at the overall scenario, #Padmaavat has put up FANTASTIC numbers in its extended weekend... Crosses ₹ 100 cr mark... Wed [limited previews] 5 cr, Thu 19 cr, Fri 32 cr, Sat 27 cr, Sun 31 cr. Total: ₹ 114 cr. India biz. 👍👍👍— taran adarsh (@taran_adarsh) January 29, 2018
This showed the immense public interest in the film. Now, the film is nearing the Rs 250 crore mark.
The record that Padmaavat would be eyeing next is Salman Khan’s Tiger Zinda Hai. That film is still luring in audiences in different parts of India. In its first weekend, Tiger Zinda Hai that released on December 22, collected Rs 114.93 cr.
#TigerZindaHai is SENSATIONAL on Day 3... East-West-North-South, the biz witnesses REMARKABLE growth... Metros and beyond metros, plexes and single screens - it’s creating HAVOC... Fri 34.10 cr, Sat 35.30 cr, Sun 45.53 cr. Total: ₹ 114.93 cr. India biz. #TZH— taran adarsh (@taran_adarsh) December 25, 2017
In fact, Padmaavat’s first four days’ collections were less than Tiger Zinda Hai’s three days’ figures.

#Padmaavat is back in form on Sat... Witnesses BIG JUMP... Will cross ₹ 250 cr today... [Week 3] Fri 3.50 cr, Sat 6.30 cr. Total: ₹ 245.80 cr. India biz.— taran adarsh (@taran_adarsh) February 11, 2018
Of course, the situations were different for both films, and in the longer run, Padmaavat might turn out to be a better match for Tiger Zinda Hai. So far, Padmaavat has earned Rs 245 cr while Tiger Zinda Hai has registered approximately Rs 339 cr.
Akshay Kumar’s earlier hit Toilet Ek Prem Katha had collected Rs 51.45 cr in its opening weekend.
That brings us back to PadMan, which has started gaining momentum now, but will it be able to sustain it for long?
