A massive blaze was reported from a four-storey building in the narrow, busy and crowded lane of Kinari Bazar in Chandni Chowk on Thursday afternoon. At least 10 people were trapped inside the building at the time of the incident.
Though the flames blazed on for hours, needing over 20 fire tenders, no casualties were reported. However, goods worth lakhs were destroyed and the power connection to the locality remained affected for several hours.
The building, located behind Sis Ganj Sahib Gurdwara, serves as a manufacturing unit for jewellery boxes as well as rented accommodation for a few people on the top floor.
There were around two dozen workers at the box-manufacturing unit when flames were sighted around 12.45 pm. The trigger for the blaze remains to be investigated but the police believe short-circuit to be the cause.
Though the fire started on the first floor, it quickly spread to the entire building. “I was visiting the gurdwara with my family when I noticed black smoke rise over the locality. I ran here to find the entire building up in flames,” said Manavjit Singh, a resident of Hari Nagar.
The fire department was alerted around 1 pm and over one dozen fire tenders were immediately dispatched to the spot because of the threat the fire posed in the crowded locality.
Many people in the building, meanwhile, focused on removing the gas cylinders from inside. “One cylinder burst but we managed to remove 10 other cylinders,” said one of the survivors.
The firefighters struggled to gain access to the building due to narrow access. Along with fighting the blaze, they had the task of rescuing several workers trapped inside because of the flames at the very entrance of the building.
“We rescued the people by taking them to a balcony and other open areas of the building that allowed them to enter the neighbouring building. There was no casualty,” said a fire officer.
The blaze was finally controlled by 4 pm. The cooling operations continued till late evening.
Kinari Bazaar is a wholesale market popular for bridalwear. This is the second incident of fire in Chandni Chowk area within a fortnight. On May 23, a major fire had broken out in the area, gutting over 40 shops.
