From Deepika Padukone’s sequin-covered denims to Lupita Nyong’o’s bling-y ensemble — celebs around the world are shimmying into different occasions with outfits with a generous dose of shine and sparkle, thanks to the trend of sequins that is back with a bang.

The element has come into its own and has become a dressing craze yet again. “This is a time of sparkle and lights, and therefore, it’s only apt to see a lot of bling in vogue. Sequins are always cheerful and brighten the look,” says designer Swapnil Shinde.

Glam up Indian wear by introducing a dash of sequins to an outfit just like this Ridhi Mehra ensemble.

Not only celebrities, international designers like Paco Rabanne and Lanvin, and Indian designers such as Monisha Jaising, Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla, Rana Gill and Anamika Khanna, among others, have all brought sequins to the ramp this season, stressing on the importance of the element.

French actor Marion Cotillard uses sequins as detailing for her otherwise understated sweater.

“Whether you go for subtle shine or all-out shimmer, there’s something for everyone when it comes to sequins. It helps you stand out in a crowd. The drama factor is high, and it’s one that connotes a fancy occasion, something feminine and eye-catching,” says Jaising. Steal celeb style for New Year parties and be the centre of attraction.

Deepika Padukone makes a nifty sartorial choice by teaming up a stripped white shirt with a sequined skirt.

Do’s and don’t

1 Wear only one sequin-embroidered piece at a time

2 Sequined outfits paired with blingy accessories are a big no-no, unless you want to look like a disco ball

3 Avoid wearing sequined outfits during the day unless they have minimal sequined detailing

4 Avoid sequins in flashy colours. Stick to nudes, gold and black.

Get the look right

1 Quirky and fun patterns can be created on sweatshirts or pants, using sequins, for a lovely party vibe

2 A sequined top can be paired with straight pants

3 Gold-sequined loose pants with a crisp white shirt and a statement accessory can be paired together

4 A medium-sequined tote with a printed jumpsuit/dress can totally glam up the look

5 Sequins can be used on sheer panels of skirts or tops/tunics

6 They can also be used in cuffs and collars

7 A sequined headband/handbag can also be teamed up with the look by those who would like to sport the trend in moderation

8 Iridescent and emerald green-sequined accessories are in vogue. So, go for sequined lace-up shoes or sequined gloves

9 Sequined trimmed anarkalis are perfect for a traditional do

10 A full-sequined dress is a bold sartorial choice

11 Trendy sequined leggings go well with a plain white shirt or top

12 Team up a formal look with a full-sequined blazer.
